The Classic Tuna Melt is a quick, comforting meal featuring flaky canned tuna combined with creamy plant-based cheese slices, crispy smoked turkey bacon, and fresh herbs. Ready in under 30 minutes, this sandwich offers a savory and smoky flavor profile with a delightful crunchy texture, perfect for busy weekdays or cozy dinners. It’s easy to customize and uses simple pantry staples to create a satisfying and light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Tuna Mixture

  • 1 can tuna in water, drained thoroughly
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (natural)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (natural)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (natural)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Additional Ingredients

  • 2 slices plant-based cheese slices
  • 3 slices smoked turkey bacon, cooked until crisp
  • 2 slices whole grain or sourdough bread
  • Butter or plant-based butter, for grilling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tuna Mixture: Drain the tuna thoroughly and place it in a mixing bowl. Add mayonnaise (natural), Dijon mustard (natural), lemon juice (natural), chopped parsley, chopped chives, salt, and black pepper. Stir gently but thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
  2. Cook the Smoked Turkey Bacon: Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the smoked turkey bacon until it becomes crispy. Remove from the pan and place on a paper towel to drain excess fat. Set aside.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich: Lay out slices of whole grain or sourdough bread. Spread the prepared tuna mixture evenly over one slice. Layer plant-based cheese slices on top of the tuna mixture, then add the crispy smoked turkey bacon slices for a smoky crunch.
  4. Grill the Melt: Heat a pan over medium heat and lightly butter the outside of each bread slice. Place the assembled sandwich in the pan and press gently with a spatula. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the plant-based cheese has melted beautifully.
  5. Serve Warm and Enjoy: Remove the sandwich from heat once the cheese is melted and the bread toasted. Cut in half and optionally garnish with extra fresh parsley or chives. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Ensure tuna is well drained to prevent soggy sandwiches.
  • Grill the sandwich on medium heat to melt cheese without burning bread.
  • Fresh parsley and chives add bright flavor and should not be skipped.
  • Crispy bacon adds important texture contrast.
  • Use sturdy bread like whole grain or sourdough to hold up during grilling.
