Description

Chicken Teriyaki is a flavorful and easy-to-make Japanese-inspired dish featuring tender boneless, skinless chicken glazed in a luscious teriyaki sauce made from natural ingredients. This recipe is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner, delivering a balanced meal with rich umami, sweetness, and a zesty aroma. Suitable for all skill levels, it offers versatility to customize with different proteins or vegetables, making it a family favorite.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 1/2 cup natural soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1/2 teaspoon natural gelling agent

For Cooking and Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • Toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine natural soy sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, fresh grated ginger, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), and natural gelling agent. Whisk until the sugar dissolves completely and set aside.
  2. Cook the Chicken: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a splash of sesame oil. Place the chicken breasts or thighs in the skillet and cook until browned on both sides and cooked through, approximately 5-7 minutes per side depending on thickness.
  3. Add the Sauce: Pour the prepared teriyaki sauce into the skillet with the chicken. Simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and evenly coats the chicken.
  4. Garnish and Serve: Transfer the chicken to a serving plate, spoon any extra sauce from the pan over the top, and garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately with your chosen side dishes.

Notes

  • Marinate the chicken in part of the sauce for 30 minutes prior to cooking for deeper flavor.
  • Cook chicken in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding the pan and ensure a good sear.
  • Use fresh grated ginger and minced garlic for the most vibrant flavors.
  • Add the natural gelling agent gradually to control sauce thickness and prevent clumping.
  • Allow cooked chicken to rest a few minutes before slicing to maintain juiciness.
