Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (natural)
  • 1 tsp sea salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • ½ cup warm whole milk (plant-based)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (plant-based), melted
  • 1 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)

For Brushing

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (plant-based), melted

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: Warm the water until comfortably warm to the touch. Sprinkle the active dry yeast and a pinch of sugar over the surface. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until frothy and bubbly to ensure the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar (natural), and sea salt. In a separate container, gently warm the plant-based milk, then mix in the vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural) and melted plant-based butter. Add this mixture and the frothy yeast water to the dry ingredients. Stir with a spoon or use a stand mixer with a dough hook until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky. This develops gluten for great texture and structure.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 to 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the dough to release air bubbles. Divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each into a smooth ball by tucking edges underneath. Arrange side by side in a greased baking dish or sheet pan with some space between each.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the shaped rolls and let rise for 30 to 45 minutes until puffed and touching.
  7. Bake and Brush: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 18 to 22 minutes until golden brown on top. Immediately brush tops with melted plant-based butter to keep them soft and flavorful.

Notes

  • Use warm, not hot, liquids to activate yeast effectively without killing it.
  • Properly knead dough to develop gluten for airy, tender rolls.
  • Cover dough well during rising to prevent drying out.
  • Use an oven thermometer to ensure accurate baking temperature.
  • Brush with melted plant-based butter right after baking for shine and softness.
