Description

Crispy Baked Honey Mustard Tofu Tenders offer a perfect blend of crunch and sweet-tangy flavors with a golden, crispy exterior and tender center. This easy plant-based recipe is ideal for busy weeknights or gatherings, delivering a wholesome, flavorful dish baked to perfection without excess oil.

Ingredients

Scale

Tofu and Coating

  • 14 oz firm tofu, pressed
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (or gluten-free panko for gluten-free option)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for drizzling)

Honey Mustard Glaze

  • 3 tbsp honey (natural)
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard (natural)
  • 1 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp natural gelling agent

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Press the firm tofu to remove as much moisture as possible to ensure maximum crispiness. Once pressed, cut the tofu into tender-sized strips, about 3 to 4 inches long for even baking and easy eating.
  2. Make the Honey Mustard Glaze: In a bowl, whisk together honey, Dijon mustard, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, and the natural gelling agent until smooth and well combined. This glaze will add a beautiful sheen and perfect sweet-tangy balance to the tofu.
  3. Coat the Tofu: Dip each tofu strip into the honey mustard glaze, letting any excess drip off. Then gently roll each piece in the breadcrumbs, covering completely but carefully to keep the shape intact for maximum crispiness.
  4. Bake to Golden Perfection: Place the coated tofu tenders on a lightly oiled baking sheet or silicone mat to prevent sticking. Drizzle a little olive oil over the top to help with browning. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping gently halfway through, until the coating is golden and crunchy and the tofu is tender inside.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Allow the tofu tenders to cool slightly so the coating crisps up further and the flavors settle. Serve with your favorite sides, dips, or garnishes for a delicious meal or snack.

Notes

  • Press tofu thoroughly to remove excess water for best crispiness.
  • Use the natural gelling agent in the glaze to help it stick to the tofu.
  • Flip the tenders carefully halfway through baking to keep the breadcrumb coating intact.
  • Let the tenders rest briefly after baking to set the crunchy coating.
  • Using olive oil spray helps achieve even browning without extra oil pooling.
